How to build an elevation profile from a GPS route

A route profile reveals where a path climbs or descends. It is often more useful to hikers and cyclists than total distance alone, especially when planning a demanding day outdoors.

How does it work?

Start with an ordered route geometry. Sample height along the line and pair each measurement with distance from the starting point. Plot distance horizontally and elevation vertically to create a readable chart.

Where can you use this API?

Link the chart to a map so hovering over a segment identifies its location. Show the route minimum and maximum and explain whether displayed ascent is calculated from filtered samples.

What should you consider?

Total ascent is not simply finish elevation minus start elevation. It sums positive changes and is sensitive to sampling intervals and noisy measurements.
